Stories from the Road
Kumbhalgarh Fort : If you haven't been to 15th century Kumbhalgarh Fort you haven't been to a Fort in Rajasthan. Period. For me personally, after Kumbhalgarh, Amber and Mehrangarh are merely “pleasure palaces” masquerading as Forts. Once you arrive at the Kumbhalgarh Fort don’t just enter and start climbing up immediately. Once the tickets are bought I recommend your clients head towards their right along the massive entrance and go on a leisurely stroll to admire the massive outer walls of the Fort. Its staggering design is mind-blowing and clever. Clearly this was a Fort built for battles, was forever battle ready. And when your clients finally enter ask them to head to the temples on their right. Let them climb up the stairs to the parapet and spend some time gazing at this magnificent piece of history on the distant hill top (3,600 ft above sea level). From here it is easy to imagine what our colleague Lovleen Sagar once wrote “rank upon rank of loyal warriors streaming down the hillside ready for battle. If you listen carefully, you may still hear faint echoes of clashing armour, neighing of horses and above it all, the spine-chilling trumpet of a charging elephant.” Ask your clients not to hurry. It is easy to fall in love with Kumbhalgarh from here and makes the uphill climb a lot easier. There is a stall selling water and chocolates which I recommend your clients buy and carry. After spending time at the palatial complex at the top and while on their way down tell your clients about this almost hidden space under the shade of a huge Peepal tree which can be accessed by continuing in the right direction from the Pagra Pol (gate). Really peaceful. A great place to end the tour of the Kumbhalgarh Fort and to spend some quiet moments before the final descent to the parking lot.
