Citrus County Farmstay near Hoshiarpur: Experiencing authentic Punjabi Hospitality
The main bungalow has 3 air-conditioned Guest Rooms and the garden has 9 air-conditioned Luxury Tents laid out for the guests. Each tent is located at a sufficient distance from each other which ensures privacy and comfort of a private zone for oneself in this lovely farmhouse! The Guest Rooms are quite spacious and adorned with minimal furniture. Each one of them has a king-sized bed, an attached private bathroom and ample sitting space. The furniture in the rooms also includes a TV, wireless broadband internet connection and oil heaters. The tents are spacious too but occupy smaller area than the Guest Rooms and include an attached bathroom. To keep the true spirit of adventure alive, TVs have not been installed in the tents. The bathrooms are large, clean and have running hot and cold water along with the rain showers.
The host Harkirat Ahluwalia is a proud Punjabi who has a robust and jovial demeanour. He and his wife Jasveen manage all the activities at the farmhouse with a team of loyal helpers, cooks and drivers. Harkirat and Jasveen have two children, Zorawar and Partap, who study in a school in Chandigarh. The last but not the least, two Labrador Retrievers, Rufus and Simba, complete the family and respond to the hosts and the guests attentively. Harkirat plans the activities for his guests meticulously striking a perfect balance between giving company to his guests and providing them ample time for themselves.
Since Punjab is an agrarian state and is Citrus County is a Farmhouse most of the activities here revolve around agriculture.
- Enjoy a tractor trolley ride through Kinnow Orchards owned by Harkirat and learn about the Israeli irrigation technology that his father brought over to India about 4 decades back.
- Go for an interesting evening walk through Chhauni Kalan village led by Harkirat and interact with the villagers. Go into their compounds to have a closer look at their cattle sheds and the agricultural equipment owned by them.
- Harkirat owns a piece of land about 16 kms away near Nara Forest Reserve and Dam. This place has an excellent view of the foothills of Himachal Pradesh nearby. It is being developed as a Yoga Retreat named ‘Firdaus’ by Harkirat for discerning guests. At the moment he uses it for private dinners for the guests visiting Citrus County Farmstay.
- The meals are a great time at Citrus County for the guests to interact with the hosts at a personal level. The discussions about Punjabi culture, its heritage and history are quite lively and interesting. Harkirat’s father who lives nearby too joins in at the time of dinner to enthral the guests with the stories about his ancestors who were Generals in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s army and later adorned the British Indian army.
Citrus County Farmstay is located at such a convenient location that it is easier for the travellers to visit many other interesting places in Punjab. Anandpur Sahib – the birth place of Khalsa (the baptised section of the Sikh community) is just 80 kms / 2h00 away. Kapurthala – the erstwhile capital of Kapurthala Princely State is 70 kms / 1h45 away. Amritsar – the holiest city for the Sikh community is located at a distance of 120 kms / 2h30 drive.
