The backwaters are unique to Kerala. Meandering through the coastal areas of Kerala is a long intricate network of lagoons, lakes, canals, estuaries and deltas of several rivers that flow into the Arabian Sea. This is a natural phenomenon, as major rivers and streams that flow within Kerala drain themselves into the backwaters region, resulting in creation of several small land strips and lagoons. The backwaters are one of Kerala’s largest fresh-water sources, rich in marine habitat besides being naturally beautiful.
Kerala backwaters are not just about life along the narrower canals. It is also about the communal harmony that quietly exists. It’s about a unique cultivation pattern where agriculture is carried out below sea-level which you see up close, while gliding in the houseboats on the backwaters.
Take Photos with Care
Respect the privacy of the local communities living on the Backwaters. The riverside is also their kitchen, their bathroom and their living room. Do not take pictures of the people when they are washing themselves or their clothes in the canal. The constant clicking of cameras can be perceived as intrusion.
Respect local religions and traditions
Dress modestly on the houseboat or when visiting the communities.
Respect Local Rules
Do not force entry into prohibited or restricted areas that will disrupt the ecology or the cultural sentiments of the people.
Respect Local staff
Treat the houseboat staff with respect and humility.
Show Interest
Learn about the local history and culture, pick up basic words in Malayalam and try to communicate with the staff and the community. They will be delighted to meet visitors who are interested in their lives.
Save Energy
The electricity consumed on the houseboat is generated by a diesel engine. Switch off the air conditioning and lights when not required and enjoy the silence of the backwaters at night.
Save Water
Every drop of fresh water has to be produced by a freshwater plant, which is rare. The same water is shared by the local communities. Save water when showering or brushing your teeth. The washrooms on the houseboats are operated by septic tanks. Do not deposit waste paper, plastic, cardboards or feminine hygiene products into them.
Do not Litter
The water from the river and lake is a basis for life for the communities living in the backwaters, as well as for the fish and the clams we eat.
Many families are still using the lake water as their main water source. Do not hinder their healthy development by throwing garbage or cigarettes in the water.
Ask for safety instructions if they are not provided to you when starting your houseboat experience.
If you wish to help the local children, ask your tour guide or local representative where you can donate your money more effectively.
